“The Prodigal Experience”

the-prodigal

Have you ever experienced a time where you felt lost and confused? I’m sure we have all gone through times of confusion about who we are and what our purpose is. Yesterday I had thought-provoking conversation with a family friend, that inspired me to write this post. Our conversation was about how I chose to come back home with my family, to figure out my life and to feeling like a failure because of that.

See, before moving back home to Dallas, I was in living independently in Houston; I had graduated, and ended up getting a job that I thought was for me, but soon found out that it wasn’t. The company let me go, and I of course wanted to know why because I thought that I was doing my very best…

I was there for exactly a month, and honestly felt like I didn’t belong, I wasn’t sure of my responsibilities at all. I thought that I was just being irrational, so I pushed those thoughts out and tried to keep the best attitude about my new position. The day I got fired was already crap, and I worked a full day *rolls eyes*. I was called into the conference room and let go within 10 minutes. I cried, I mean ugly cried in front of someone who possibly could have cared less about my well-being. I cried because I knew that I couldn’t fight what wasn’t meant for me anymore; it was time for me to go back home and re-access my life.

My “Prodigal” experience, stems from a biblical story, The Prodigal Son, in which one of the younger sons has to return home after using up all of his inheritance. The father openly embraces and celebrates his son’s return, as he was “lost” and is now “found”. I didn’t have the inheritance to blow, but I did have to return home to get back to my purpose, to get myself together. As I’ve discussed in previous posts, you have to focus on your own path, what’s meant for you, is ONLY FOR YOU.

The conversation that I had with my family friend stuck with me because I knew in my heart of what I was capable of. My friend’s reassuring words, spoke life into me, so much that I am confident in God’s plan for my life. I am not exactly sure of what’s to come, but I am expecting great things. I’ve already been blessed in ways I couldn’t imagine and 2016 isn’t over! Won’t he do it!

I’m completely open to goodness and the blessings that are prepared for me. I pray that you received something good from this post and that 2017 is good to you.

A Natural Hair Style that will Fit Under Your Grad Cap: Collab w/ Fresh Kinks

Graduation is vastly approaching…

Which means that everything in life wants to happen all at once; the intense search for credible decent paying jobs, going on endless interviews, keeping up with the last of bit of school work and trying to not slip into the ever-so-tempting senioritis (consisting of nonstop Netflix binges and sleeping all day).

Aside from all of that, I teamed up with my “Blogger Bestie” Rachael of Fresh Kinks, on grad looks that work for natural hair. Because let’s face it, these caps weren’t made to fit our glorious crowns of hair! With our step-by-step approach, we were able to achieve these easy and cute looks, for your big day!

So at this point, I sectioned my hair into 3 parts; 2 on the sides and 1 on top. Next I started my braid from the left side and did another one on the right. After braiding both pieces, I combined both braids into one to give it an effortless look. Although I thought about getting weave for this big day, I remembered where I lived- in Hot Houston, TX. And there’s definitely no way I’m going to wear my fro out, so that I can turn into a Sweaty Betty. This style needs some prep work, such as blowing it out the night before and conditioning it.

Remember those sections we parted in the previous steps? Well now we’re going to split the top section into 2 more parts and use a flat-iron to curl them. You can use any heat protector for this step too. Now let’s change this shirt and put this whole look together!

This style is perfect for my graduation, especially since it’ll be in the middle of the day (prime time for the heat and humidity). I wanted to straighten it, but by the time I walk across the stage my hair will revert back into a fro causing me to sweat and feel uncomfortable. As well I love that I didn’t need many hair products to get this style, it’s effortless and still has that “special day” factor. Thank you for reading, and also don’t forget to head over to Fresh Kinks for more hair inspo!

Congrats Grads!

This whole embracing your sexy thing is new to me, especially since it’s an untapped concept  that I’ve never explored. I remember being younger, and cringing when spring/summer came, I’d hate wearing anything that was revealing and showed my body. I especially didn’t like showing my arms, they’re kind of flabby and have no definition, but I’m totally ok with that. Funny thing is, I used to never wear styles like this above; this body hugging dress, shows every curve of my body and arms. And those wedge strappy sandals, I would never think to wear them, until now.

At this very moment I’m opening myself up to embracing and wearing more styles like these, I feel and look damn good! My ass looks great, my thighs are juicier than ever and I’m cool with my arms being out and you should too, it’s your body and you should love every inch of it. Have a spring fling with yourself!

Enjoy your body!

xoxo

Classic Tips for the Curvy Girl

Getting dressed for the day can be a total struggle. Sometimes we all just have “those days:” When nothing seems to lay right, when every color seems to wash out your skintone, when even trusty favorites fail you. But that’s no reason to give up. We all have days that it seems the fashion gods are working diligently against us. Although it’s difficult to overcome the discouragement set in place by many outfits gone wrong, there is a glimmer of hope to be had.

Do you ever wonder how fashion stylists are so quick to piece together a figure-flattering outfit for their clients with no signs of hardship? Sure, they’re experts in the field, but there is also one other important factor in their process. They know what they’re looking for. For each body type, there is a tried-and-true set of style rules sure to work in just about every situation. And after researching what some of these tips are for plus-size fashion, I’ve found my own set of “rules” to keep in mind while dressing for just about any occasion.

Here’s what I learned:

Find your shape. Chances are you’re aware that different women are categorized within different “shape” groups. To name some of the most common: There are the apples, who carry most of their weight around their midsection; there are the pears, who are widest at the hips; and there are the hourglass figures, featuring a defined waist and an equal breast-to-hip ratio. Once you determine your shape, it becomes much easier to dress in a way that accentuates your strongest assets and mask those you’re self-conscious about. I like this simple guide on WhoWhatWear for finding your shape in a couple simple steps.

Use tailored pieces to your advantage. Some women favor baggier clothing as opposed to skin-tight options. If this is your preferred style of dressing, consider bringing shape to your outfit with tailored add-ons. Smart pieces like blazers and structured coats bring new lines to otherwise shapeless garments. And instead of the fabric clinging to your body, your figure is given a silhouette with the toppers you choose. Street style photos are great for browsing unconventional clothes pairings that inspire. Lyst’s articles usually include street style pictures that can be used to imagine your own next outfit pairing.

Loud accessories are your friend. There’s no sense in hiding behind your clothing. Plus-size fashion has come an incredibly long way, and now more than ever, loud and proud styles are the ideal statement in the curvy girl world. Being proud of your shapely figure is the first step to rocking a gorgeous new outfit.

The next step is to dress strategically. On the topic of accessories,  Marie Claire gives a great point, “A showstopping necklace draws the eye up—ideal for balancing out your skinny jeans, white trousers, or patterned pants.” Using bright jewelry, scarves and shoes are all tactics for bringing bold, flattering style to your outfit, breaking up the colors and providing different focal points.

Where are You Shopping?

Happy Hump Day lovelies, you’re almost to the weekend, I know I’m excited! Anyway, in today’s post, I will be sharing with you 3 retailers that are now carrying plus sizes. The list includes Target’s Ava & Viv, Charlotte Russe Plus Sizes + and H&M +. First, I just want to say that I am thrilled that there are more brick and mortar stores carrying plus sizes, we have options now! I know for me being a college student loving to shop, it can sometimes be overwhelming especially with my humble budget. I mean I love looking cute too, so of course I had to share this list with you all!

Let’s start with Charlotte Russe!

This week they recently just launched their plus line and I was more than thrilled, because I love shopping there. I mainly just buy shoes and accessories, but now I have the opportunity to actually buy clothes! I haven’t had the chance to visit my location for their plus line, but they are online as well. Below are some of my favorite pieces that I can’t wait to snag! I chose these looks because they are perfect for the spring/summer season. And…they have a few discounts too!

Next is H&M Plus:

So I’m officially in love with their newly updated line and can’t wait to get my hands everything. Just glancing at their clothes I notice they have more refined and casual looks that you can dress up or down. I also like to shop here for their business casual clothes which can be transitioned from day to night. So if you’re going for the “young professional and chic” look, this is your place to shop. They also have my favorite chino pants too, who doesn’t love chinos? Below are some of my go to looks. I chose these looks based on this amazing bi-polar weather (sarcasm at its best) we’re having in Texas, because you never know what the weather will be like.

Price Range: $25-$70

Size Range: 14-24

Last, but not least Target’s Ava & Viv:

Fellow plus size bloggers Nicole Mason, GabiFresh and GarnerStyle had a lot to do with getting this line to Target and I am very grateful that they did. This line is the epitome of cool, fresh and comfy. The fabric is breathable and stretchy, as well as affordable for the ladies shopping on a budget. I am excited about this line because it has the potential for growth and gives us bigger women another option to find clothes. I don’t know about you, but this is a huge step towards improving clothes for plus size women, we are no longer subjected to blowsy moo moo tops or shapeless jeans, there are clothes out there for us! Now get out and go shop! (whoa, sorry I got a little excited, but you get where I’m going).

Model Casting: Curves Swim Week Edition

Good afternoon Lovlies!

In today’s post I’m bringing back an informational, style board on how to prepare for a model casting call. Last year I did one for a standard fashion show, “Preparing for a Model Casting: 1426 Fashion Week Edition” and since it’s almost summer time, I thought I’d share my expertise.

LS 1426 is having another model call on March 7th, 2015. If you’re interested in attending please click on the flyer below to register.

LS 1426 Curves Swim Week Model Call

LS 1426 Curves Swim Week Model Call

I’m sure as you all know, the plus size fashion industry is booming! As an advocate for body acceptance and embracing your full self, I want to ensure that all my readers are prepared if you decide to pursue a career in fashion/modeling. From my observation, I have noticed that being overly prepared for model calls, ensures that you will be successful in getting a call back and hopefully booking a show. If you’re serious about pursuing a modeling career, treat this as a job interview, it basically is one. Below is a guideline for what you need to bring to a swim suit model casting.

model casting

Model Casting: Swim Edition

As you can see, this board is pretty simple than what I normally post about, and that’s the point. When you enter into the model call, you want whatever agency to immediately see you and need you for their show. There is no need for extra accessories and over the top clothing, you’re basically a blank canvas. I know most model castings ask that you wear dark wash jeans or black leggings so  they can assess your walk and shape. I also have shown a pair of flat tennis shoes to wear, until you get to your destination. From my experience, wearing flat shoes keeps me from having my feet hurt if I’m having to walk a long way to the model call. I’m sure you’ve seen those episodes of “America’s Next Top Model” when they did go sees, to book jobs with designers. You just have to be prepared for anything, you may have to walk a long distance or get lost, so bring flat shoes to avoid foot issues.

Now since this is a SWIM SUIT fashion show, please bring at least 2 swim suits; a 1 pc. and 2 pc. Again, it never hurts to be too prepared! Designers want to see if your body can adapt in any type of swim suit, as well wear one that YOU feel comfortable wearing as if you were going to the beach or pool. If you can’t see yourself being fabulous in it, neither can the designer. As well, if you have been building your portfolio with pictures from your past jobs, bring it! This serves as your modeling resume and shows designers you are serious.

Here are 4 of my favorite tips!

1. )Make-Up

When going to a model/production casting, minimal make-up is the way to go, unless the agency/designer says otherwise. I always like to play up my eyes by adding eyeliner and mascara. I keep my lips simple with a pale pink colors, I then add blush and a light layer of foundation. The designers want to see that they can create their vision on your face as well, so by adding tons of make-up they won’t be able to assess your best features and use them. From experience of wearing too much make-up, it all melted and morphed into this weird look on my face, thus making me insecure and not being as confident in myself. As well it helps if you take care of your face with washing it regularly and drinking water.

2. )Personality

In today’s fashion world, being just “pretty” doesn’t cut it, models are becoming ambassadors for companies, owning businesses, and doing more than just walking the runway. In a sense you are a walking billboard and need to present yourself in a manner in which people want to book you so you can continuously have work. For me this was kind of hard to do, especially since I am generally shy and don’t speak first, but with constant practice and networking with people, it has helped me out a lot; I’m usually the first person to say hello or smile now!

Now if you’re the outgoing, bursting body of energy, you are pretty much what they look for in spokesperson modeling. When arriving at a casting, I found it to be helpful say hello or smile at everyone you come into contact with. People remember you, especially if you put effort into connecting with them. Also don’t be afraid to introduce yourself, give a firm hand shake and eye contact (not the crazy kind though.)

3. )Punctuality

Timing is everything! If you know you have a long commute, plan ahead in what route you’re taking and  estimate how long it will take you to get there, nothing worse than showing up late to a casting. In general being on time is a virtue, so use this as practice to start being punctual. This is just like going on an interview and if the designer/agency sees that you are late or running late, they will most likely not book you for the job. If you have ever watched “America’s Next Top Model”, the models went on “Go Sees”, in which designers looked to see if they fit their company’s image and if you were late you would be disqualified. Arriving at least 15-20 minutes early is also a sign that you are serious and want this job, so just be on time!

4 .)Your Walk

Last and most importantly is your walk, although there is variety of walks, owning and perfecting your signature one is a must. Your personality and confidence plays a huge role in how strut your stuff, this is not the time to be timid and shy. What I do when I know I have to walk, is tap into my alter ego, or pretend there is no one else in the room but you. Practice, practice, practice! If you know the date of the model casting, you should be using every minute to work and perfect it, that will be one of the requirements agencies judge you on. Also please break in your shoes! Find some that are comfortable for you and fit the requirement of the casting.

Thanks again for reading this informational guideline on swim suit model castings, I hope this helps and if you have any questions please feel free to comment or contact me here! Good luck to everyone!
