The Ebbs and Flows of Life

“ebb and flow

a recurrent or rhythmical pattern of coming and going or decline and regrowth.

This expression makes reference to the regular movement of the tides, where ebb means move away from the land and  flow move back towards it”.

Wow, it’s already February? Who else needs a restart? I know I do, the beginning of the month for me was not what I wrote on my Quarter 1 vision board goals, but I’m still here in a new month. We thank God!
With the second month on a roll, I’m already learning lessons and rewiring some old thinking habits. One habit that I HAVE to change, is my health. I had a not-so-great doctor’s visit, resulting in me being pre-diabetic, meaning I need to get my blood sugar down to a healthier level, by exercising more and choosing better foods for my body.
Easier said than done though, on top of working full time and running my consulting business, I’m a busy lady on a mission. That’s no excuse to put my health on the back burner, so I need to change my mindset, because my health is on the line.

When I heard those words, “pre-diabetic” I cringed, and wanted to just say fuck it, but I can’t keep doing that. That’s one of those habits I need to break, especially when things get tough in life, I can’t just throw in towel, I have to go with the ebbs and flow of life. This means putting in the effort to fight for what I want (healthy body and mind) and not being afraid of success anymore. Yes, you read that right, I’m afraid of succeeding, it’s a weird concept, but another thinking habit I need to change.

With the extra frustrations I’ve had this past month, I’m going to make it a point to focus on what I can fix instead of fixating on the ebbs, I just want to be the best Jasmine I can be to myself and those around me.

Casual Summer Slay with Rainbow Shops

Hey yall! Yes I know it’s been a minute since we’ve talked, life has been of course crazy; I’m working full time and running my side consulting business, so I’m pretty much busy all the time. That’s no excuse though to check in with you all! This past weekend I got the chance to explore more of my hometown Dallas,TX in one of my favorite areas, Deep Ellum. I love that every time I visit, I find something new, especially the murals.

And to make this weekend even better, I was also able to score these jeans for $10 at Rainbow Shops, and this super comfortable shirt (that I thought was a dress LOL, my ass said otherwise!) for $6 as well. I’ve been kind of obsessing over rose pink and metallic colors this summer, so it was only right I shared this cute fit with you. My style is pretty casual, I love any variation of blue jeans and a v-neck tshirt. Oh! And my shoes were only $7 from this awesome shoe store called Shu-Deal (LOL don’t ask myewhy they spell it like that, I just go for the cute and reasonably priced shoes)

If you’re ever in Dallas, take some time to visit Deep Ellum, there are so many cool places and murals to see!

“The Prodigal Experience”

the-prodigal

Have you ever experienced a time where you felt lost and confused? I’m sure we have all gone through times of confusion about who we are and what our purpose is. Yesterday I had thought-provoking conversation with a family friend, that inspired me to write this post. Our conversation was about how I chose to come back home with my family, to figure out my life and to feeling like a failure because of that.

See, before moving back home to Dallas, I was in living independently in Houston; I had graduated, and ended up getting a job that I thought was for me, but soon found out that it wasn’t. The company let me go, and I of course wanted to know why because I thought that I was doing my very best…

I was there for exactly a month, and honestly felt like I didn’t belong, I wasn’t sure of my responsibilities at all. I thought that I was just being irrational, so I pushed those thoughts out and tried to keep the best attitude about my new position. The day I got fired was already crap, and I worked a full day *rolls eyes*. I was called into the conference room and let go within 10 minutes. I cried, I mean ugly cried in front of someone who possibly could have cared less about my well-being. I cried because I knew that I couldn’t fight what wasn’t meant for me anymore; it was time for me to go back home and re-access my life.

My “Prodigal” experience, stems from a biblical story, The Prodigal Son, in which one of the younger sons has to return home after using up all of his inheritance. The father openly embraces and celebrates his son’s return, as he was “lost” and is now “found”. I didn’t have the inheritance to blow, but I did have to return home to get back to my purpose, to get myself together. As I’ve discussed in previous posts, you have to focus on your own path, what’s meant for you, is ONLY FOR YOU.

The conversation that I had with my family friend stuck with me because I knew in my heart of what I was capable of. My friend’s reassuring words, spoke life into me, so much that I am confident in God’s plan for my life. I am not exactly sure of what’s to come, but I am expecting great things. I’ve already been blessed in ways I couldn’t imagine and 2016 isn’t over! Won’t he do it!

I’m completely open to goodness and the blessings that are prepared for me. I pray that you received something good from this post and that 2017 is good to you.

A Natural Hair Style that will Fit Under Your Grad Cap: Collab w/ Fresh Kinks

Graduation is vastly approaching…

Which means that everything in life wants to happen all at once; the intense search for credible decent paying jobs, going on endless interviews, keeping up with the last of bit of school work and trying to not slip into the ever-so-tempting senioritis (consisting of nonstop Netflix binges and sleeping all day).

Aside from all of that, I teamed up with my “Blogger Bestie” Rachael of Fresh Kinks, on grad looks that work for natural hair. Because let’s face it, these caps weren’t made to fit our glorious crowns of hair! With our step-by-step approach, we were able to achieve these easy and cute looks, for your big day!

So at this point, I sectioned my hair into 3 parts; 2 on the sides and 1 on top. Next I started my braid from the left side and did another one on the right. After braiding both pieces, I combined both braids into one to give it an effortless look. Although I thought about getting weave for this big day, I remembered where I lived- in Hot Houston, TX. And there’s definitely no way I’m going to wear my fro out, so that I can turn into a Sweaty Betty. This style needs some prep work, such as blowing it out the night before and conditioning it.

Remember those sections we parted in the previous steps? Well now we’re going to split the top section into 2 more parts and use a flat-iron to curl them. You can use any heat protector for this step too. Now let’s change this shirt and put this whole look together!

This style is perfect for my graduation, especially since it’ll be in the middle of the day (prime time for the heat and humidity). I wanted to straighten it, but by the time I walk across the stage my hair will revert back into a fro causing me to sweat and feel uncomfortable. As well I love that I didn’t need many hair products to get this style, it’s effortless and still has that “special day” factor. Thank you for reading, and also don’t forget to head over to Fresh Kinks for more hair inspo!

Congrats Grads!

This whole embracing your sexy thing is new to me, especially since it’s an untapped concept  that I’ve never explored. I remember being younger, and cringing when spring/summer came, I’d hate wearing anything that was revealing and showed my body. I especially didn’t like showing my arms, they’re kind of flabby and have no definition, but I’m totally ok with that. Funny thing is, I used to never wear styles like this above; this body hugging dress, shows every curve of my body and arms. And those wedge strappy sandals, I would never think to wear them, until now.

At this very moment I’m opening myself up to embracing and wearing more styles like these, I feel and look damn good! My ass looks great, my thighs are juicier than ever and I’m cool with my arms being out and you should too, it’s your body and you should love every inch of it. Have a spring fling with yourself!

Enjoy your body!

xoxo

Classic Tips for the Curvy Girl

Getting dressed for the day can be a total struggle. Sometimes we all just have “those days:” When nothing seems to lay right, when every color seems to wash out your skintone, when even trusty favorites fail you. But that’s no reason to give up. We all have days that it seems the fashion gods are working diligently against us. Although it’s difficult to overcome the discouragement set in place by many outfits gone wrong, there is a glimmer of hope to be had.

Do you ever wonder how fashion stylists are so quick to piece together a figure-flattering outfit for their clients with no signs of hardship? Sure, they’re experts in the field, but there is also one other important factor in their process. They know what they’re looking for. For each body type, there is a tried-and-true set of style rules sure to work in just about every situation. And after researching what some of these tips are for plus-size fashion, I’ve found my own set of “rules” to keep in mind while dressing for just about any occasion.

Here’s what I learned:

Find your shape. Chances are you’re aware that different women are categorized within different “shape” groups. To name some of the most common: There are the apples, who carry most of their weight around their midsection; there are the pears, who are widest at the hips; and there are the hourglass figures, featuring a defined waist and an equal breast-to-hip ratio. Once you determine your shape, it becomes much easier to dress in a way that accentuates your strongest assets and mask those you’re self-conscious about. I like this simple guide on WhoWhatWear for finding your shape in a couple simple steps.

Use tailored pieces to your advantage. Some women favor baggier clothing as opposed to skin-tight options. If this is your preferred style of dressing, consider bringing shape to your outfit with tailored add-ons. Smart pieces like blazers and structured coats bring new lines to otherwise shapeless garments. And instead of the fabric clinging to your body, your figure is given a silhouette with the toppers you choose. Street style photos are great for browsing unconventional clothes pairings that inspire. Lyst’s articles usually include street style pictures that can be used to imagine your own next outfit pairing.

Loud accessories are your friend. There’s no sense in hiding behind your clothing. Plus-size fashion has come an incredibly long way, and now more than ever, loud and proud styles are the ideal statement in the curvy girl world. Being proud of your shapely figure is the first step to rocking a gorgeous new outfit.

The next step is to dress strategically. On the topic of accessories,  Marie Claire gives a great point, “A showstopping necklace draws the eye up—ideal for balancing out your skinny jeans, white trousers, or patterned pants.” Using bright jewelry, scarves and shoes are all tactics for bringing bold, flattering style to your outfit, breaking up the colors and providing different focal points.
