Series-Is the Side Hustle Right for You? Part 2: How I Plan and Schedule my Content

Welcome back to my series on “Is the Side Hustle Right for You“! Before jumping in to Part 2, I want to recap Part 1: How I Got Started for you.

Let’s get to it!

Last week I shared my journey on how my side hustle of social media management, came about. Through the connections I made back in Houston, I was blessed with the opportunity from a fellow blogger friend who told me about it. This time last year I had been laid off from my job and had to move back home to Dallas, with my parents.

Basically while I waited and applied for jobs, I worked for a local non-profit creating and managing their social media, and I’m still doing that  along with a few other clients!

This year so far has been a whirlwind of growth for my side hustle, I’m learning a lot and want you to learn with me on my side hustle journey!

Series-Is the Side Hustle Right for You? Part 1: How I Got Started

In today’s workforce, being your “own boss”has become a more attractive way to live a quality filled life. There are now so many non-traditional career options, that it can sometimes be overwhelming to think about.

As a creative professional, I knew for awhile that I would eventually want to be my own boss, and that the work I produced, would positively impact my community. I honestly can’t stand the thought of working just to pay bills my whole life.

Although I am working a full-time job now, I still make it a point to schedule time to manage and grow my consulting side business. I’m 100% in this!

Now if you’re looking to create a side hustle for yourself and eventually turn it into a full blown career, then ask yourself, “Is the Side Hustle Right for Me?”

The “Side Hustle” is the new macro-trend and millennials, like me are taking advantage of this opportunity. The majority of us work full-time jobs and work a side hustle or second job, to help us survive and develop skills necessary for our next opportunity. Everyone that I know, has that second job, because we eventually want to have the freedom of not being subjected to a cubicle our whole lives…

How I Got Started:

Moving back home to Dallas, due to being laid off from my job, I didn’t have a solid plan as to how I was going to bounce back. From September 2016 to May 2017, I was without a job and my unemployment checks were coming to an end.

I know I put in at least 30 applications daily, but still no luck. At this point I was sliding into that post-grad depression of not knowing how my life would end up, especially if I couldn’t find a job. Then one night I received a Facebook message from a blogger friend, checking on me. I was honest in expressing the frustration I felt at not having any luck, getting call backs for jobs. After listening to me, she told me about a connection she had in Dallas, that needed help managing their social media. It was a local non-profit called Carter’s House, that would give me first freelancing opportunity.

After connecting with the founder and establishing their social media needs, I found myself signing a contract! Even though I had never created and managed anyone’s content, other than my own, it was exciting to venture into this blessing.

With my previous blogging experience and creating my own brand, I was prepared to take this opportunity on. Fast forward to today, I am still working with Carter’s House and another client, while working my full-time job!

Managing the Side Hustle:

So why work a full-time job and work your side hustle? Isn’t that a lot of work? Yes, HELL YES! There are times where I ask myself, do I really love what I’m doing, and my answer is always yes, despite how tired I may be. Working a “9-5′” and then coming home to work on your own business, is tough and tiring, but rewarding because you are producing work that is yours, and for that you should be proud.
