The Art of Gratefulness

It’s the beginning of the week, and as we all head back to work, school, etc let’s practice gratefulness. Yes I know the world is overwhelming at times, but for some reason reflecting on what you’re grateful for, makes life just a little bit better. Lately I’ve made it a point to say out loud or write down 3 things I am grateful for, this helps calms my anxiety and keeps me from comparing my life to others.

Here are three things that I’m grateful for:

1. The ability to cherish the present moment

How often do we really stop to “smell the roses”? The ability to be present in wherever you are in life, is an amazing gift. Just being present wherever you are, allows you to be just you and only you. When you give yourself a break from worrying about the future, to just stop and think about what you’re grateful for, you open yourself up for amazing, good energy. Everyone wants good energy right?

So do what’s on your heart, date that guy, wear that crushed velvet dress, or travel to that country you’ve always wanted to go to. Be present and go for it.

2. My Amazing Support System

Sometimes my thoughts get to me, and I forget how amazing my support system is. To everyone that has helped me level up in my life, thank you! I honestly would not be at this point, if it we’re not for my support system. I am truly grateful for those who take time out of their day to check on me, send me crazy memes or refer business opportunities to me. THANK YOU!

There is nothing more valuable than having a strong support system, consisting of friends and family. In their own special way, each person has helped me develop into who I am now. And I like to think that I’m pretty phenomenal! I challenge you to look at those around you, and thank them if they have helped you at any point in your life. If you can, just call them, take them to lunch or send a thank you note.

3. My Ability to Adapt Anywhere

In my 25 years of life, I’ve seen some things, experienced some great and not-so-great moments, but I’m still here; present as ever. I am grateful for everything that I have experienced so far, because these experiences have shaped and molded me into a resilient woman. I know wherever I go in life, I’m going to be great. Although I’ve gone through some tough years lately, I am still rockin and rollin honey. Fear rarely resides wherever I am, I know I can adapt to any situation and environment.

What I hoped you gained from this post, is to stop for a moment and really think about where you are in life. Whether you’re in a good or bad spot, be grateful for that shit! I mean it! I know when we’re going through tough times, it’s hard to be grateful, but you have to trust me on this one.

This week, I want you all to make it a point to write down or say out loud, three things you’re grateful for. You can share this with someone you trust or keep it to yourself, just express to the universe that you are grateful.

Well that’s all for now lovelies! Remember to be grateful this week and thank you for reading!

Spotlighting Entrepreneurs Series: Chef K9 of Kick Back Texas

Good afternoon lovelies! I am happy to share with you all my new series of showcasing young entrepreneurs, who are working diligently towards their passions and breaking the mold of what a young millennial should look like. Seeing others my age and older pursue their dreams is inspiring and motivates me to continue on my path and to explore what I love doing. I hope you all enjoy this interview series, as I want to bring together entrepreneurs in uplifting each other to keep grinding!

Please welcome Local, Houston Chef and Caterer, Keenan Thomas of Kick Back Texas:

JB: Tell us a little about yourself, any quirky hobbies? Where are you from?

KT: My name is Keenan Thomas, best known as Chef K9, I’m From Houston Texas , 24 years young with amazing energy and I’m very ambitious. I like to cook,  paint, freestyle amongst friends and come up with great ideas that seem too crazy to comprehend. A lot of people tell me I have an old soul. Mainly because when it comes to feeding friends and family, they can’t leave my house without eating, lol

JB: How did you start cooking/catering?

KT: I started cooking at the age of nine. I was in my grandmother’s kitchen, she got me started early! My first dish I made was eggs and rice. She always would make that for breakfast, sometimes dinner. Eggs and rice got us through some tough times if you know what I’m saying. She showed me how to make it. Over time I began to add my own flair to it. By age twelve I started making own recipes. I pitched an idea to my uncle about a buffalo wing that was like no other. A turkey wing that was tossed with buffalo sauce. I gave it a name and everything, it was called Buff Buffalo Wings. My uncle gravitated to the idea and acted fast on it. That night he made it for the family and raved over it. Really I was just a kid playing with my food. Where I realized that this was something that I was destined to do, was in the 11th Grade around testing time. All the kids at the school would go to this sandwich shop in the morning for breakfast until the staff put an end to the kids walking off campus. So a bulb clicked in my head like I should do this. So I hopped on it. That day I told my fellow class mates that I would be having pre-ordered breakfast sandwiches for sell and collected my money. I had about 30 orders that one day spent about 20 dollars on the items and sold them for 3 dollars each. That was 40 dollars a day for the rest of the testing week. I profited almost 180 dollars that week off something I didn’t mind doing for free. That was how I first got into catering and knew this was something for me.

JB: What’s the meaning behind “Kick Back Texas”?

KT: Kick Back Texas is a way to bring like-minded people together through food, it’s a way that people can network among others knowing that there is enough for everyone to eat.  It’s a way that the business individual can have a good time. Kick Back Texas hosts creative events and creates the environment. We strive to make your experience a moment to remember. We make sure that your five senses are pleased. As well, Kick Back Texas makes sure that you hear good music, that you see the vision come alive, feel good vibrations and smell and taste great food. We’re a Foodies Six Flags!

JB: What are your future plans for your business? Do you plan to go global?

KT: I want to travel the world with my brand. My goal is for every house hold to be able to know what Kick Back Texas is. I would only like for this brand to be in Texas. I want it to be known globally but only located in here to make it more valuable, such as making a trip to Six Flags. My ultimate goal is to invest into other businesses and give back to people by opening up a creative center for kids, to expand their creativity. When I was a kid, I think it would have molded me better if I had a place to express my creative side. That’s what I want to give back to the youth.

JB: What inspires you on a daily basis to grow your business?

KT: To see people try my food for the first time and see the joy it brings them.

JB: Being an entrepreneur, what makes you different from your competitors? How do you approach competition?

KT: I’m my only competition. I’m competing with yesterday, trying to out do tomorrow. What makes me different as an entrepreneur, is that I don’t really focus on others and what they are doing, because my brand is a piece of art and if I get off track I lose focus of the vision.

JB:What’s your favorite meal to cook or eat?

KT: That’s a tough question, but if I had to say my favorite would either be shrimp and grits or eggs and rice. My favorite food type has to be Asian. I could eat it everyday!

JB:Now it’s your turn to say anything you would like, whether it’s advice, a favorite quote, etc.

KT: Perfect Your Recipe!

WARNING: All of these food pictures will make you hungry!

Rooted: Fro Butter “Jamaican Black Castor Oil” Product Review (Sponsored Post)

Hey loves! So it’s definitely been awhile since I’ve posted, but that doesn’t mean I forgot about you amazing readers! I took a much needed break to refresh myself and focus more on my internship. If you all follow me on social media, you know that I just graduated from the Nordstrom Internship Program! As well I had to get my school stuff together, since this is OFFICIALLY my last year, I literally have 8 classes until graduation!

Ok, enough about my break, lets get to business!

This past week, I received the chance to review a natural hair product from Fro Butter. This company focuses on using 100% organic ingredients for their hair care products, as well both owners Caroline and Susana are firm believers in using natural herbs, oils and spices for all types of remedies, including hair.

The product I tried was the Jamaican Black Castor Oil, the uses for this product is to thicken your hair and moisturize it. What I also loved about this product, was that it conditioned it and added shine, something that I’ve been looking for in hair products. My hair loves to soak up everything that I put into it, especially in the summer! With my hair being color treated at the moment (I love adding color to it), it helps that the castor oil protects and moisturizes my roots too.

Caring for a natural afro like mine, it’s just as important as to how you apply the product, with any oil that I use (whether it’s in a cream or loose oil form) I apply it to washed, clean hair. I let my hair air dry for about 10 minutes , section it off into 4 parts while it’s still damp, massage the oil from root to end and proceed with my twist out. There is no way I’d do my hair dry, even if I had oil in it, there would be breakage and that just hurts!

Anyway, below is a picture of a simple twist-out that I did on my hair, using the Jamaican Black Castor Oil and my styling cream. After twisting my hair, I slept with my satin bonnet to keep those roots moist and neat for the morning take down.

I was really impressed at how voluminous my hair was, and the moisture retention was great too! Now since this product has 100% organic ingredients in it, my scalp tingled a little when I went outside, my hair tends to do that when I try new products. Overall I enjoyed using it and will implement it into my hair regimen to keep my roots moistened; it smells great too!

Benefits of Jamaican Black Castor Oil:

  • Increases hair growth and moisture retention
  • Thickens hair that starts to thin
  • Reduces and prevents hair damage
  • Eliminates dry hair
  • Makes the hair fuller and shinier
  • Deeply conditions and moisturizes hair and scalp
  • Prevents dry scalp
  • Boost your hair’s overall health

Since my hair needs constant moisture, I would suggest massaging your scalp twice a week; at the beginning of the week and at the end, it just depends on how your hair takes oil.

Thanks loves! Connect with Fro Butter to see which product is right for you!

Green Street “Green with Envy Blogger Social” Recap

June 2nd, 2015

Last week I was invited to attend the Green with Envy Blogger Event, to get exclusive details on the upcoming improvements in the shopping/lifestyle area.

We started our night with delicious bites and complimentary cocktails from McCormick & Schmidt’s Seafood and Steak. As we all ate, we got a chance to catch up with each other and listened to a local musician play while outside. That’s one of the many benefits you’ll enjoy at Green Street, outdoor eating and great entertainment!

Around 730 pm we started our first style mission at BCBG Maxazaria. All of the fashion bloggers styled outfits for the Free Press Summer Fest, which is like Cochella but for Houston. Most of the outfits were with fringe, flowy fabrics and bright colors. Another amazing treat too, was that all of the attendees got an additional 15% off from BCBG’s sale!

Tapping into Your Sexy (Sponsored Post )

What if I were to tell you, that you’re sexy? How would you feel? Would you shy away from the compliment? I find myself often downplaying it when people compliment me on my looks. No one wants to ever seem vain, but I don’t think that’s the point. I never considered myself “sexy”, since most of the time I’d just see myself as the frumpy girl with bushy hair and glasses. I’m still that girl about 85% of the time, but lately I’ve been feeling “myself”. I don’t mean sexy in just what I’m wearing but in how I feel about me, how I walk with my head held high and do what makes me happy. I’m to the point where I have fully accepted my body. I’m in awe of what it looks like  sometimes; I love my rolls, large thighs, how I look in my clothes and my smile. There is nothing wrong with loving everything about yourself, I mean you have one body, so you might as well love it!

I’m more confident in my appearance than ever, because it pleases ME and I could care less of anyone’s opinion on what I should wear. With this positive attitude towards my self image, I was elated that 247 Jewelry Store reached out to me and sent clothes that I normally would shy away from. I especially loved how this 2 piece set complimented my shape and my butt looks amazing ! (lol) Both pieces can be worn with other styles, so the versatility is another bonus too.

Lovelies, I want you to know that YOU can be sexy at any size and shape. Don’t allow these set beauty standards to take away your greatness.

Thanks for reading!

Summer Casual Style with 247 Posh Closet (Sponsored Post)

Well it’s finally May now and that means summer is approaching quickly! In the past, summer was not my best season. I live in Texas and the heat here is borderline unbearable. Being a bigger woman with thighs that touch and rub together, can be an uncomfortable experience. I used to wear jeans or really long unflattering skirts to hide my big, cellulite legs.

The options for cute, plus size clothing in the summer have been hard to find, but with the recent influence of #psbloggers and body positive movements, my options for comfortable clothing are growing.

My weight has distributed itself mostly to my hips and thighs, so it’s important that this area stays cool. I never want to experience wearing basically winter clothes again as the heat rises. With this style pictured below, 247 Posh Closet has sponsored a go to casual summer look paired with my favorite blue Jean shorts and nude sandals.

In case you’re wondering, I was at the Whole Foods here in Houston off of Post Oak. I felt super comfortable in my style, and loved the twist of this white shirt. This style is perfect for running errands or just wanting to be casual, because who wants to dress up everyday?!

I have to thank 247 Posh Closet for sending me this amazingly simple shirt, it’s definitely a main staple for my summer style. I especially love how flowy the top part of the shirt is, you can wear it with anything. If you’re interested in buying this look, please visit the style details below. Thanks lovelies!

Diana Ross Style Inspiration

I’ve been playing around with my style for a bit now and I must say it’s been quite the journey, I’m still trying to grow into “my signature” style. For the most part I shop just about anywhere that has a great bargain and fits me well, so when I stumbled on this special piece I had to grab or ask my mom for it. See, we went thrifting a year ago and both fell in love with this sparkly, black and gold top, it was definitely from the 80s I’m sure. Although it was hard getting it back from my mom, it was worth the distance, I’ve never loved a piece as much as this one. I finally got the top back in my possession and styled it with some inspiration from Miss Diana Ross herself.

Her style is iconic and her essence was truly felt while styling this outfit. I love that she was bold and unforgiving in her style, whatever she wore she made sure you knew she was present. That’s my approach in life at this point, I’m here honey, with big hair and sparkles! Studying her style has allowed me to dig deep and embrace who I am and to love the growth of it. I enjoy being able to add certain elements to my style now, especially with my afro, it’s a part of me and shows that I’m proud of who I am.

I want to thank Tomayia Colvin Photography for catching this image and “pulling the fierceness” out, sometimes it’s hiding so when I get the chance to let it out, I roll with it.

I hope you all found this post enjoyable and to remember to embrace your style wherever you are in life. You’ll be amazed at what you can come up with.

With Love,
