1426 Fashion Week: Boutique Owner Feature with Bella Brown Plus

Good evening everyone! So I know I haven’t posted as much this week, it’s been super crazy and I had to take some time away to get things “handled” (insert Olivia Pope’s voice lol).  Anyway, I have another feature for you all and she is the owner of Bella Brown Plus. I am especially excited about her showing her clothes during 1426 Fashion Week, because she has some pretty amazing stuff for the big gals!

Bella Brown

Let’s get into the interview I had!

JB: I have to know, what inspired you to start selling plus size clothing? Was this something you always saw yourself doing?

BB: Currently, I am not designing, however, I may launch a design line in the near future. I am a Plus Boutique owner who specializes in Plus Size Sexy. I cater to the Plus Size Sexy Diva that has the confidence to take it outside of a thought or desire. I started Bella Brown Plus Boutique out of frustration. I knew what I wanted to look like in my clothes and I was not getting that  from the racks. So I went on the hunt for plus size sexy clothing. In my search I found clothing that made me look and feel amazing and I knew I had to share my findings with others who craved the same feeling in clothing, just in a larger than average size.

JB: How does your clothing line express who you are?

BB: The discovery was the confidence booster I needed, I found me; I found the look I wanted and found my style which created my brand Bella Brown Plus.

JB: What will be your involvement with 1426 Fashion Week?

BB: I will be showcasing fashions from my Plus Size Sexy Line, of Bella Brown Plus Boutique.

JB: What is your opinion of “Integrating the Runway”?

BB: My opinion of Integrating the Runway… Is simply that it’s ingenious! I wish someone would have come up with this idea 10 years ago… Linda Scott and 1426 Fashion Week is taking fashion to a higher level and market place. Allowing all body types, ages and social economic backgrounds on one stage is going to be explosive! For this instance alone, is why I am excited about being apart of 1426 Fashion Week.

JB: How long have you been in the fashion industry? Where do you see your designs in 10 years?

BB: Frankly speaking I have been in the fashion industry since I was 16. I was an international IS model. I moved into the plus sector in 2003. Ten years from now I hope to have retail stores in every major city and 7 countries , as well as my designs gracing stages across the globe.

JB: Would you like to see your designs in a big retail store or keep them in a boutique style environment?

BB: I am definitely wanting to keep the boutique environment, I want to be able to provide personalized fittings and styling to my customers.

JB: What is your source of motivation to keep going in this growing fashion industry?

BB: My husband who wants to see me succeed, my mother who has prayed and supported me to no end, my children who encourage me to keep going even when it takes me away from them. My sister who is always there to lend a helping hand and my business mentor coach/Auntie, who keeps me on my toes in this industry.

JB: Lastly, what advice do you have for people trying to get into this industry?

BB: The best advice I can give to someone looking to enter this industry in any capacity is to Trust God… and then your vision. Invest in a coach, do the research and always operate with Balance… GOD first. FAMILY second and your BUSINESS third. In that order anyone can find success.

Vixenz Designs

Vixenz Designs

JB: I have to know, what inspired you to start designing? Was this something you always saw yourself doing?

TW: Yes I have always dreamed about designing clothing for plus size women. I am a plus size woman and I used to hate shopping because all the stores had the same items in the plus selection. Flower patterns and solid black! I was furious I wanted to be sexy too. I said one day I will design a brand strictly for plus size. This is my dream, I finally got the courage to express myself through my passion: FASHION

JB: How does your clothing line express who you are?

TW: Vixenz Designs is for plus women who are not afraid to be sexy. You have to have confidence in yourself and be fierce with it. This is exactly who I am. I am a sexy plus size woman with a lot of confidence and I’m ooh so fierce. Lol

JB: What will be your involvement with 1426 Fashion Week?

TW: I am bringing sexy, classy and a big bang to 1426 Fashion week

JB: What is your opinion of “integrating the runway”, meaning what do you think of showcasing all types of bodies on the runway?

TW: I love it. Why only showcase one size when the world is full of different sizes and beauty? I want to see people like me on the run way.

JB: How long have you been in the fashion industry? Where do you see your designs in 10 years?

TW: I am a fashion beginner. I am just popping out. I have been sketching my own designs for about 2-3 years, but never had the courage to try and do anything with them.

JB: Would you like to see your designs in a big retail store or keep them in a boutique style environment?

TW: Both! At this point I am not picky! I want everyone to get a taste of Vixenz Designs

JB: What is your source of motivation to keep going in this growing fashion industry?

TW: My family! My future!

JB: Lastly, what advice do you have for people trying to get into this industry?

TW:  My advice to all the new beginners like myself would be to stay focus and never let a negative person tell you, you can’t do it. If it is in God’s will then it’s already done. Push yourself to the limit. You be your cheerleader and your support system. Let no one and nothing stop you! Do a little research on your own. If you are not sure about what someone is telling you research it. Ask questions and Network, Network, Network!!

It was a pleasure interviewing Takita and I am very excited, especially since she’s an up and coming designer, can’t wait to see her designs at 1426 Fashion Week! Also check out her design process below.

1426 Fashion Week: Designer Feature with Wendy Striggles

So as you all know I am blogging for the 1426 Fashion Week, which is a show focusing on integrating the runway and bringing in all sizes and shapes into the fashion industry. As well 1426 Inc. empowers up and coming models and designers to showcase their work in a creative environment, that brings us all together. The first designer that we are focusing on will be Wendy Striggles, of The Wendy S Collection.

My conversation with Wendy was great, she’s been in fashion since she was 9 years old, her mother would take her to fashion shows and watch Style on CNN. In my interview with her, it was evident that her presence in fashion industry was strong.

JB: I have to know, what inspired you to start designing? Was this something you always saw yourself doing?

WS: In the 80’s and 90’s my mother would make my sister and I watch Style with Elsa Klensch on CNN every Saturday morning. It’s where I fell in love with Betsey Johnson, Isaac Mizrahi, Gianni Versace, and Donna Karan. My mother help my mother sew clothes, make patterns out of brown paper bags, and shop for fabric.

I sketched my first collection at 10 years old. I named it Our Time and it was for plus size women. I wanted to be apart of the fashion industry so much that my heart would ache when I watched awards shows growing up. I would imagine celebrities asking me to design a gown for them and I would sketch until it was time for bed. As I got older and the reality of adulthood stepped in, I chose another career. It wasn’t until 2007 when my friend said I’m sick of you talking about making dresses, so I entered your name in a fashion show. She told me I had 4 months to get it together. I laughed but she was so serious! I did the show, the crowd loved it, and after I did my final walk with the models I cried like a baby!!! I knew GOD was setting me up to live my dream.

JB: How does your clothing line express who you are?

WS: My clothing line is a style I like to call Casual Chic. Clothing should be fun, stylish, glamorous, effortless, and most important COMFORTABLE. When I wear clothing I have to be able to do two things eat and dance without feeling constricted. My dress or jumpsuit has to work well with heels and sandals. I don’t believe in spending $80 or more on a garment and I can only wear it for one type of occasion. If I can wear it on the red carpet, shopping with my girls, and on the beach; that’s MY dress.

JB: What will be your involvement with 1426 Fashion Week?

WS: This year I will be showcasing our 2015 Spring Summer Collection. I had so much fun creating this collection! I look forward to sharing my love of fashion with the 1426 Fashion Week audience

JB: What is your opinion of “integrating the runway”, meaning what do you think of showcasing all types of bodies on the runway?

WS: I think showing all body types on the runway gives the audience a chance to see themselves in the garments. Growing up all I saw were standard size models on the runway. I felt like those designs weren’t meant for all women. But because of that it pushed me to design for the excluded women. Linda Scott and many other fashion show producers are changing how the runway is viewed. Hopefully NYFW designers will follow suit.

JB: How long have you been in the fashion industry? Where do you see The Wendy S Collection in 10 years?

WS: I’ve been in the industry since 2007! It has been a learning and growth experience. I just recently changed our name from Big Girlz inc to The Wendy S Collection. We are still in a process of growth. My sites are set on being apart of Magic in Las Vegas and the Atlanta Apparel Market shows. Having our own store is also within our future. I’m optimistic at this point!

JB: Would you like to see your designs in a big retail store or keep them in a boutique style environment?

WS: Every designer would love to have their designs in a big retail store! So I would be lying to your audience if I said no, lol. I do prefer the boutique environments over the big retail stores. The boutiques work harder to get you noticed as an indie designer. Many women prefer shopping in boutiques because they offer unique designs. I’m able to reach more customers interested in the passion in my design.

JB: What is your source of motivation to keep going in this growing fashion industry?

WS: I’ve been disappointed many times during my career in the fashion industry. During the times I felt like quitting, GOD places people and opportunities in my path to encourage me. I’ve become friends with so many indie designers, they understand the struggle. Just being able to talk with them has kept me motivated. The customers, models, and show producers will always ask me, “Okay so whats next, we are ready”. I have a partner that will cut, sew, and stay up all night to help keep my dream alive.   The people that GOD has placed in my life keeps me motivated.

JB: Lastly, what advice do you have for people trying to get into this industry?

WS: There is so much advice I could give but I will give the 4 most important

  1. Don’t compare yourself to others. This is your path. Have mentors instead. Research how to start/run a business.
  2. Do things (events, shows, marketing etc.) that will grow and benefit your companies growth. If it doesn’t make dollars, it doesn’t make sense.
  3. Have FAITH! You will doubt yourself before others will. Just know this business doesn’t happen overnight and you will have to work hard to be taken seriously as a designer. You will cry, get mad, fed up, and discouraged. Faith will pull you through it every time.
  4. Know who your target market is, How will you reach them, and How will you keep them? What type of clothing are you designing? Stay true to your brand’s style. Customers will know you without seeing the label if you stay true to your brand’s style.

Product Review! eShakti Floral Dress

Good afternoon beautiful readers! So I was recently contacted by eShakti to do a review on one of their products, which was really fun for me!  This is my first sponsored post, so I took my time to make sure it was done right!

About eShakti:

What I love about this company is that they are focused on customizing the perfect fit for you, whether you choose a dress, shirt, skirt, etc. everything is customized to fit you. I honestly was a little skeptical about giving my measurements online, but they hit the nail on my fit! Once you figure out your measurements and height, then you are able to move on the step 3 and customize the styling. For the dress that I am wearing above, I opted for sleeveless and for the hem to hit above my knee. I also wanted the dress to be figure hugging, because I love embracing my curves!

JB2

My sizing for this dress is 1X-18W, the custom styling option is a deep V-neck and mini tunic length. As far as movement of the dress, it was pretty comfortable and allowed me to walk with ease even though the back of the dress was a little tight, but that’s just because of my large bum 🙂 With the style of this dress, it’s perfect for that transition of the in between seasons, especially in Texas! As far as where to wear it, I would wear it to a day party, for a nice brunch or even on a date! It’s light cotton stretch allows for fluid movement and also cools you down if you live in a humid climate like me.

JB5

As for the shoes, I just opted for a simple chunky, nude pump from Forever 21, they matched perfectly and were very comfortable. You could also do a pointed-toe pump or wedge heel too! The jewelry option was from my genius friend/photographer Samantha Guzman, she suggested we layer two necklaces to finish off the look, which ended up working perfectly! I’ve never layered any of my jewelry before, but seeing how it’s done, I’m going to try it more for the Fall season.

JB6

Again I want to send a huge THANK YOU to eShakti for sponsoring this post and allowing me to express myself in this fun, flirty dress! And for being such great followers/readers, below is a discount code that ends 9/28/2014, so get to shopping!
