Event Recap: Naturally Happy Hair Presents: Beautique Hop, The Ultimate Shopping Party

The Ultimate Shopping Party!

The Ultimate Shopping Party!

When I was presented with the opportunity to attend Naturally Happy Hair’s Beautique Hop , I was instantly intrigued by its name and the agenda of the event . A  few days before the event, I read up on Naturally Happy Hair and knew it would be something positive and fun! The event was organized by  Naturally Happy Hair Magazine Co-founders, Crystal Knight and Chimere Norris (very sweet ladies by the way) who thought of an interesting concept of “Beautique” hopping, to explore Houston’s best boutiques. Amazing, right?!

First Stop: The Ultimate Dressing Room

Our first boutique stop was at my first internship, The Ultimate Dressing Room . I walked inside, signed in for the event and was given a gift bag, along with delicious bites and mimosas. As I walked around, I spotted the owner; Sumptuous Sulay, greeting everyone and making them feel welcomed in her boutique. I was able to catch up with her too! Did I mention there was also complimentary eyebrow threading and we were given a 15% off discount? From the minute I walked in I was treated like a queen and welcomed with open arms.

Around 11:30 am, more women started to come in and the energy was picked up as they shopped and chatted with one another. Soon after that, Crystal and Chimere announced that it was time to start loading up in the charter coach that was provided to take us to each boutique. All the ladies gathered their items and we were on our way to the second stop; Obsidian Beauty Supply. During the bus ride, everyone introduced themselves so we could better connect and enjoy the trip. Along the ride we played fun games and received great giveaways, from Jessi Curl , Nothing but Hair , Eden Body Works,  and Salon De La Soul Sister . Crystal and Chimere definitely took every aspect of the event into consideration, especially with the delicious hors d’oeuvres and cocktails that kept everyone happy!

Second Stop: Obsidian Beauty Supply

Obsidian Beauty Supply, not your average store!

Obsidian Beauty Supply, not your average store!

We arrived at our second stop, Obsidian Beauty Supply , owned by Leslie Phillips. This wasn’t your average beauty supply store… we were instantly greeted by the pink and bright exterior, upbeat music and great customer service. The variety of products allowed for a great shopping experience. The staff was knowledgeable about everything from skin to natural hair products- which I normally don’t receive when shopping in other stores. I can also say I appreciated the attentiveness Ms. Phillips gave to us Beautique Hoppers, she made us feel welcomed and gave us 15% off on her store products (I just love deals on hair products), and even with the deal she gave us, the regular prices were still reasonable (So I’ll definitely be making another trip). Walking around the store, I felt that it was more boutique style than just a regular store because we were provided hands-on service in a fabulous environment. As we said our goodbyes and headed to the bus, gift bags were given out with sample products on behalf of the boutique.

Third Stop: Melo Drama Boutique!

Arriving back in the historical museum district, Melo Drama Boutique  was our third stop. I’ve driven by this place a few times and never had time to stop by, so I was especially excited that we stopped here. Entering the boutique the vibe screamed high-fashion and uniqueness. On top of the amazing environment, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner; Jackie Adams, that made my visit even more exciting. Her personality added even more essence to the boutique’s chic and cool atmosphere. This particular boutique offered image and styling consultations for women looking to spruce up their wardrobes., I can’t wait to go back and explore more of Melo Drama! I was also impressed by the stylish clothing in the store as well, a few of my favorite pieces were the bold colored and printed maxi dresses (definitely a must have for the Spring/Summer season).

Last Stop: Heiress Boutique!

Last but not least, we arrived at Heiress Boutique  located on Westheimer road. This boutique was the epitome of a fabulous and sexy lifestyle, even their casual clothes had an edge to them! I loved the bright and fun colors of the body con dresses, which are perfect for this season of club and party nights! Did I mention Mercedes, the owner was generous in giving us, Beautique shoppers, a 25% off discount? (*faints*, ok I’m up) Yes she did and I ended up buying this cute, neon green infinity scarf that I cannot wait to pair with pieces in my wardrobe! If you want a sexy look for Spring, I highly suggest taking a visit to Heiress Boutique! You’ll be treated like royalty with great customer service in a pretty environment!

To wrap up the Beautique Hop, all the ladies boarded the charter coach and played one last game for the grand prize of a $50 gift card. Throughout the event, if you bought something from each boutique, you were given a ticket and at the end, the ticket numbers were called out. I ended up winning a super cute “Born this Way” shirt from Naturally Happy Hair and I was “naturally happy” for sure. Not only were the products great, but I was truly impressed and grateful for the opportunity to attend this event. It was fun and I met some amazing women who are strong leaders in our communities. The part that stood out to me the most, was the celebration of the boutique owners. They were all African American women who truly worked hard to accomplish their dreams. Personally, I was inspired throughout this whole event. It encouraged me to further believe in myself and my dreams. I want to thank all of the ladies I met at the event, especially Crystal Knight and Chimere Norris of Naturally Happy Hair.

Tapping into Your Hustle

“Everyone’s definition of a hustler can vary from time to time. The way people see a hustler and the way the hustler sees himself are most likely two different things. Some forget that in this competitive world we live in, if you don’t have the hustler mentality within you it is very hard to separate yourself from the stragglers and get ahead. As the saying goes “You can’t knock the hustle” and you truly can’t knock hustler down.”

                                                                        – Preston Waters, “The Art of The Hustler”

Work Attire

I roll over in my bed to see that my clock says 7:30 a.m., “Time to get movin’”, I think to myself. As I shuffle my feet across the carpet floor, my mind slowly comes together of what’s ahead of me today; prayer, workout, eat breakfast, get dressed, go to work (don’t be late!), attend two meetings after work, go home, cook dinner, eat dinner, study and maybe go to bed at a decent hour. I nod to myself in agreement that this is what I’m supposed to do today, all of these things…

As I’m brushing my teeth in a rhythmic motion, a random thought pops up in my mind; “Jasmine, you do too much. You always have a lot on your plate. When will you take a break?” Breaks? What are those haha? A few people have asked me why I do so much, and all I could really think to say was that I’m a hustler. I see better for my life and I am driven daily to work up to that standard I have set for myself. No one gives  me anything, I work, research and study for the things that I want. Some of my endeavors have worked and some haven’t, but I still keep moving forward.

Continuing to finish my hair and washing my face, I decided I was going to dress presentable today. I was going to show up looking ready, even though I was still tired and my thoughts were running in every direction. I decided that Monday wouldn’t be a drag and if it was, I was going to look damn good. Skinny black pants that fit just right, gave me that extra boost I needed to make it through today. Not to mention the other aspects of my outfit lifted me up higher: a classic white button down (you all know those are my favorite) tucked in neatly to my pants, and then I added my favorite emerald-green sweater to make the outfit pop. I was already in my “hustler” mode, ready for anything, my mind was made up that today would be productive and positive. Last pieces to my ensemble, was this silver statement necklace given to me by a friend and my burgundy ballerina flats. I opted for heels at first, but my feet said no. Anyway I was completely dressed to the nines. Everything fit right, make up was fresh and professional, and I felt amazing putting effort into my look, I was ready for my day ahead. I then grabbed my favorite black work tote and walked confidently out of the door into my world…

Work Attire

In that hour of getting dressed for work, I realized that I embodied the “hustle” mentality; that this is who I am today, tomorrow and forever.  I will not conform my way of living and thinking to please anyone ever again, it has only brought me down the value of my potential. I’ve decided that this life of mine is precious and that I am here to achieve something greater than me.

I want to encourage whoever is reading this to practice hustling. What I mean by that, is to practice going after what you want, daily without any reservation. Sure there are ample opportunities in the world, but it’s up to YOU to go after it and sustain that ambition. Hustlers don’t just sit around waiting for something to happen; by that time they have already connected with several people, researched the information they needed and are already in route to accomplishing their goals.

Listen:

Don’t Sit. Get up and put on your best outfit.

Oh No! Chub Rub!

Chub Rub Humor

As a “blessed” woman in the thigh area, I have found it to be a love/hate relationship with my thighs. Why ? You ask, well I have the infamous “Chub Rub”. Which means that my thighs, no matter what season, sweat and get uncomfortable when walking, running, etc. This topic can be candid, because people don’t really talk about it, but there needs to be something said, especially for those people not blessed with the lovely “thigh gap”.

*Side Note: What’s the big obsession with having a –Cosmopolitan’s “Why the Thigh Gap Obsession needs to Stop”-   thigh gap??? I honestly never understood what the big shabang was. What will happen if you achieve “the thigh” gap? Someone tell me!

Ok, back to my rant about “Chub Rub”, it mainly happens to me when I wear skirts and shorts, making for a recipe of a hot disaster (and I mean HOT DISASTER). My thighs rub together creating heat and eventually sweat and if I’m out and about for a while, I get irritation and heat bumps in my inner thigh area. Now I know this sounds a little risqué for most people, but it’s a part of being a woman with big thighs, and I just want to help someone who might be experiencing the same thing I go through.

Now don’t think there aren’t ways to fix this issue, because there is! And no, this method does not involve surgery or some crazy machine dealing with thigh gaps, let’s leave that idea in the trash, where it belongs!

Let’s Fix that Chub Rub!

What I like to do after I shower, is first make sure that I am completely dry especially in my inner thigh area. After relaxing and drying off, (use this time to grab a glass of wine and  some strawberries, creates a relaxing mood) apply two simple products you already have in your medicine cabinet: Deodorant and Baby Powder.

Yes, I know you were expecting some amazing “thigh-be-gone” product but no, not here, I keep it real simple because my skin in that area is sensitive.  What I personally use is “Secret Deodorant, pH Balanced” and “Silky Underwear Dusting Powder” from Lush. These two products together create a smooth and fresh feeling on my inner thighs, and also  a self-cooling system down there, making my irritation go down and probably yours too. I know whenever I get chafing in my inner thighs, it creates an almost unbearable experience; I can barely walk and usually end up with scars, OUCH! Who wants that???

This may even be a long shot, but if you have a significant other, make applying these products fun and sexy, only if you’re comfortable with it of course! Have your partner seductively rub and massage those inner thighs and BAM! You are one turned on and comfortable person; no chafing thighs will probably lead into some amazing situations. (I’ll let your imagination run with that thought).

What Makes these Products so Special?

So you’re probably thinking, “What? Rub deodorant on your thighs?” Yes, it’s a miracle worker especially when the weather starts getting hot. You’ll thank me later! Of course you don’t have to use my deodorant, use what you already have or you might encounter more irritation if you switch deodorants. As for the dusting powder, it was a gift from my aunt and Lush products are kind of pricy, but so worth the purchase! Actually it was only $7.95 online! This dusting powder that I have is completely Vegan and made in a 100% recycled bottle. As well it’s a ” light Jasmine-scented powder with cocoa butter” that will leave your skin soft, smooth and as the bottle says “seriously sexy”.

*insert sexy smirk*

So yea, why in heaven’s name wouldn’t you want this powder? It’s handmade, good for the environment and good for your body. When I use these products I honestly feel so much better about my thighs, because when it gets hot, I get hot, and when I’m hot, I’m, well a bitch  and no one needs to see that, haha.

Prepare Yourself!

The deodorant method I found was about 8 months ago on Tumblr, so I’ve been using it ever since. It’s definitely ideal to use this method for the upcoming swim suit, dress and short season so that’s one less thing to worry about.  I mean just because you have luscious thighs doesn’t mean you have to keep them covered, they need that fresh and breezy summer air, so show those thighs off baby!

"Secret pH Balanced Deodorant"

Being blessed with bountiful curves and thighs has its ups and downs, so it’s important that the thick thigh community help each other out with these little nuances. Hope this helped, and if you have other ideas to prevent “Chub Rub”, tell me, comment below, whatever it takes, just let me know!

Help a fellow friend with big thighs by sharing this post on your Facebook page, blogs, Twitter, etc. They will thank you!

Why the hell am I still DATING BLACK WOMEN?
By: Ebrahim Aseem

A tall, Blonde, hazel eyed Aryan Beauty walked into my Black-owned, professionally-hood barber shop today, greeted by a cascade of compliments, as each patron’s brown eyes followed her from the very moment she got out of her car.

She had successfully made it pass the dozen Brown Skinned Beauties standing outside of the barbershop, staring daggers at her.

There are always at least a dozen Black Women standing outside my barbershop, dressed in club attire, hair freshly done, make-up on point, high heel game vicious, wearing their best body suit or mini skirt.

These Women have careers, own businesses & are in grad school, pre law, & pre med, yet they commute at least once a week to stand in front of a barbershop, like it is a night club line, for at most an hour…

Levels.

"Classic Funk"

Enamored. Completely invested in myself and loving every inch of my body. Doing this shoot allowed me to tap into my inner “Diva”, but come to think of it I think I’ve always had this Diva attitude, it just took some growing up and living life, to see it come into fruition. I was that quiet, shy, head-in-a-book girl, and I still am… But I have levels now, levels in which I am 100% into dressing the state of my body now.

Classc Funk

This particular outfit is a part my classic/funk style, which embraces some classic pieces (The White Button Down) yet adds a twist of funk (My Head wrap and Platform shoes). You will definitely get all the looks in this style. And here is where I encourage you, at any size, to embrace and celebrate your body. Take a good look at who you are now and remember the levels you have gained in life (new jobs, weight gain/loss, new relationship, etc.). Use these moments in life to embrace your amazing style and show yourself some love; damn it you deserve it.

***********************************

At this point in my life, I am in love with what my body has become and what it has endured. My body has been through some amazing and crazy things, but it’s still here and more beautiful than ever, this is why I chose this specific style to show it off. What I’m doing here, is promoting self-love and body acceptance. Life is too precious and amazing to live it shaming that beautiful, immaculate structure; your body.

I leave you with this: Love who you are now, it will lead into a better life experience for you later.
